The Jerwood Foundation asked us to create an identity for their new gallery in Hastings, on the South coast of England. They wanted a solution sympathetic to the local environment, which would also allow the historic Jerwood Art Collection to sit comfortably alongside an ambitious contemporary art programme.
Our solution is drawn from the unique visual language of their beach front location with the traditional wood-lap fishing huts the area is famous for. The logotype is inspired by the typography on the fishing boats, the colour palette by the pebbles on the beach.
In their first year since launch, the Jerwood Gallery welcomed more than 65,000 visitors through its doors, and is proving an important catalyst in the regeneration of Hastings. The identity has already garnered several international design awards.
